Schools – Control and Custom Settings

How may a school district control what its schools are doing on StudentCentral?

A district Administrator has the option to enable/disable many of the features for all schools within their district.

How may a school's administration control what its teachers are doing on StudentCentral?

Each school has the ability to enable two levels of advanced approval options that may be applied globally, or to specific clubs/classes/teams. With the first level of advanced approval enabled, the School Coordinator must approve each proposed event or media item before it will be viewable on StudentCentral.bigteams.com. If the most advanced approval requirement is enabled, then the principal must approve every item after the School Coordinator has approved the item.

How are media shielded students protected?

Student Central has the ability to search for media shielded students by name and can remove media immediately. Only authorized school representatives have the ability to search for and remove a Media Shielded Student.

We have a great logo for our school; may we use it on StudentCentral?

Yes. Every school creates a theme using its colors and you may include your school's logo, as well as logos for any teams or other organizations in your school.

How are accounts for students and teachers created on StudentCentral?

Student Central is always trying to reduce the workload on teachers – particularly the administrative burdens. There are three ways for accounts to be created. Regardless of how accounts are created, teachers do not have to add students to their club, class or team; that is the responsibility of each student by simply clicking on the "Follow" button for each club, class or team in which the students is involved.

  • CSV import for students, teachers, clubs and teams – this allows for an one time import of the data to create accounts and clubs/classes/teams
  • API – this type of interface will be coordinated with your IT department and may be configured to allow ongoing updates
  • Created individually

Does Student Central support "single sign-on" with other software programs?

Yes, Student Central can work with most school software to allow for single sign-on between the programs.

I have students at two schools. What do I do?

When you create your account, select one of the schools as your home school. After your account is created, click on Search located in the blue bar at the top. Locate the other school from Search and select that second school. You may now click on the Follow button in the school box near the upper left corner of that school's page. You will now receive information from the second school, just as well as from your home school. You may also follow clubs/classes/teams from the second school as well. On your My Student Central page, there will be icons for each of your schools so you may easily navigate to either school.

Why am I being logged off without doing anything?

There is an automatic log off feature on Student Central that terminates the session if there has been no activity for 5 minutes. To avoid being automatically logged off, simply check the "Keep Me Logged In" box below the email address and password when logging into your account. If the box is not checked, the automatic log off may interfere with the uploading of a document or media item that takes longer than 5 minutes.

Clubs, Classes and Teams

What types of Clubs, Classes and Teams are found on StudentCentral?

Student (clubs, classes and teams), parent (PTSA, Booster Associations) and administrative (Faculty Departments)

Who may follow a Club, Class or Team?

  • Students, parents, family members, teachers and fans
  • Students of a school may only follow a class as a member. Parents and Fans can only follow a class as a fan. When following a Club or Team, you designate yourself as a member or fan, depending on the level of notification you wish to receive.

What is the difference between following as a Member or a Fan?

Choosing to be a member of a Club or Team means you will receive all access, and will receive all updates and every announcement made by the club for routine meetings and practices as well as for the most important events. Following as a fan, you will receive access to all media and information on the site, but only receive updates regarding the most important events. When notifications are sent, the audience to receive the notification is defined as intended for just Members, just Fans, both or other subsets of each.

Can I make my Club, Class or Team restricted?

  • Full restriction - You may choose to fully restrict your club, class or team. Each member will need the designated access code in order to follow your club.
  • Restriction for members, but open for fans - You may choose to only restrict membership for the members. This means when you try to follow a Club, Class or Team as a member, you will be asked for the designated access code. If you follow as a fan, no access code will be needed. This allows communications to be kept more confidential, while still allowing a larger audience to view media intended to be viewed more openly.

Can I see who is following my Club, and school?

The sponsor of each club, class or team may view who is following as a member or fan. The School Coordinator may also see every account associated with the school.

Who controls the content posted on StudentCentral?

Teachers control the events, notifications and media for their club, class or team.

When do teachers receive approval notifications?

Teachers choose to receive immediate notifications of approvals needed or one nightly notification of approvals needed.

Can I designate a student to help me input events?

Student Central highly suggests you designate a club officer or other dependable student as Leadership for your club, class or team. The Leadership designation allows the named person to draft an event, notification, SPEC or discussion. This draft is automatically put into a pending status - you will receive a notification that your approval is needed. Once you have approved, the event goes live to the site. A great way to delegate responsibility while maintaining complete control.

Can I Remove followers of my club, class or team?

Yes, you can purge all followers designated by member or fan or choose to remove members and fans on an individual basis.

Can I choose my logo for my club, class or team?

Student Central has a variety of custom logos from which you may choose. You may also send a request for a custom logo, and even include proposed art. We will accommodate requests as much as possible.

What happens if a club, class or team no longer exists?

You are able to disable a Club, Class or Team. If you wish to reactivate this Club contact your Student Central representative.

I do not wish to have my club, class or team's events showing on the School Calendar?

No problem, Student Central has enabled a way for events to be hidden from the School Calendar while still showing on the Club, Class or Team's calendar. This option is enabled and disabled by a click of your mouse and available on a club, class or team basis.

Does Student Central offer a pre-approval process?

Yes, Student Central offers an advanced approval process which allows the School Coordinator to approve all events, notifications, SPECS and discussions before going live to the site. The School Coordinator may choose which features, if any, he or she wishes to pre-approve.

Are there other resources for helping me use StudentCentral?

On the school's dashboard, which is accessible to only the School Coordinator, there are links with every category to access help guides that are designed with lots of screen shots and annotations to make use of the site very easy. There are also animated screenshots with voice over for each screen that creates events, notifications, elections, etc. In addition, each school has a designated support representative that is backed by a support center. Each club/class/team has the same set of resources available to it.

What types of organizations may use Student Central to better communicate with school teams/clubs and students?

How does a local school chapter or team receive information from organizations?
